The Duterte Administration Gives MILF Members Farming Assistance as Part of Their Peace Negotiation Process!

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front – more commonly known as the MILF – was initially formed by the people of Mindanao in the 1960s in order to achieve autonomous freedom from the Philippine government. The group has been involved in numerous terrorist attacks and assassinations in order to achieve their aims.
In 2012, then-president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino planned to meet the MILF for a round of peace talks. It wasn’t until 2014, two years later, that the rebels finally agreed to have negotiation regarding a ceasefire with the government through their representative, Mohagher Iqbal. News and updates about the peace process have remained scarce after that.
However, in a recent report by Philippine Daily Inquirer, it was revealed that the Duterte administration has provided numerous MILF members farming tools and several animals as part of their efforts broker peace with the MILF through providing farming assistance to the militants.
According to the report, around 127 militants were given farming tools and animals from the Office of the Presidential Peace Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) in Camp Darapanan, a known MILF base.

Jacob Palao, one of the MILF members couldn’t help but cry when he received the farming assistance. He said in an interview:
“I thought about it but I didn’t expect it to come too soon. At my age, I never expected that carrying guns in the name of the struggle would end. Instead, I will be using plows and carabaos as I farm. I can now live peacefully with my family. It’s unlike in the past when I could not tell whether I would come home alive or not.”

The MILF members were given 103 carabaos83 cattle headsgoats (the source wasn’t able to cite the exact amount), rice, corn seedsrubber, fruit seedlings, and fertilizer. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Ranibai Dilangalen confirmed that it was part of the administration’s commitment to the peace process.
